Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

Had a hard time matching up straight seams with 45 degree seams on snowball blocks.  Didn’t have enough of border stripe to mitre corners as first desired.  Had to carefully match pattern when sewing together border fabric.

Ditch quilted between blocks.  First free motion quilt. FM quilted loops in monofiliment on border.

Batting  Sew Easy cotton batting.

Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

Flying geese templates for sawtooth stars were too small so used “Square in a Square” ruler to create them.  Also used ruler to create half diamond sections for centre star blocks.  Because the bias was opposite of normal, interesting patterns were created once washed.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Ditch quilted around stars using walking foot.  Walking foot stars in borders.  Lots of turning the quilt.  Used Sew Easy cotton batting from spotlight.  Lots of fuzzies and bearding while quilting.  Had to pre-wash batting.

Lighthouse for Grandma MJ. Made from Safe Harbor range by South Seas Imports.  Pattern called for it to be a double sided quilt as you go banner.  Changed to one sided wall hanging.  Used red, white and blue variegated gutterman cotton thread.  Ditch stitched around borders and straight lines in centre panel.  First time using walking foot for straight line quilting.

Nautical for Mom. Safe Harbour range of fabric plus Moda nautical fabric in red.  Alternate panel from Lighthouse wall hanging.  First machine quilted project after reading Alex Anderson’s machine quilting book.  Ditch stitched around borders and squares in panel in red, white and blue variegated thread.

Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

Grandma Mary Jean helped me piece and quilt.  She taught me how to match seams and make flying geese.

First use of perfect binding technique from American Patchwork & Quilting.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Quilted through middle horizontal and vertically, as well as through the corners diagonally. First time I learned I needed to use a walking foot to quilt.

Fused red and green fabrics back to back, satin stitched around template and cut out around edge of stitching to create flowers and leaves. Used star burst beads for centres.  Used store bought bow.

What it’s for  Me.
Batting  Poly

Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

My first quilt.

Used crappy polyester batting that melted and squished when fish were fused on.  Didn’t know how to sew on borders, so just sewed the them on; definitely not square.

I still display this quilt in my house and like to see how far I’ve come.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Essentially a quilt-as-you-go, zig zagging over the edges of the water strips. Straight line quilted 1/4″ from inside of border.
