First pic: Found $2 Jaylynn Christmas cross stitches at Spotlight. I wanted something that I could carry to do in the car while we moved. Never actually did them in the car, but they were nice portable projects.

$1.50 cross stitch kit. Originally said “North” but there are no penguins at the north pole, so I changed it to “South”.

I noticed after I took the picture that I used the wrong shade of yellow on half his sign. *not wearing glasses*

Shows

My quilt won first prize for a new quilter at the Braidwood Quilt Event 2011

Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

I wanted to make this quilt for my Grandma Lois for Christmas 2011. I had already purchased a fat quarter set and lace for it. Unfortunately, she passed away in June. I decided to finish the quilt to take to my Aunt Pam at home in California after I visit my Grandma’s grave to show her.

Finishing this quilt was a major challenge. I have never had so many things go wrong on one quilt. The fabric I ordered for the back didn’t show up as soon as I thought, so I needed to buy some locally. I bought a pre-cut remnant, but it was two inches too short. I went back and bought more. While cleaning my bobbin case, I dropped a screw from the needle plate down into the machine. After I got it back, I ran out out of thread and ended up buying the right colour, but wrong weight. After finishing the quilting, I was 10″ short on binding. Fortunately, the quilt shop had more. I managed to get it done a day earlier than I had planned and have sent it off to the quilt show.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Quilted with roses and leaves in the diamonds. The rose border was quilted around the print in pink variegated thread.

I used Matilda’s Own cotton/poly batting for the first time. While it quilted very similarly to 100% cotton, there was definitely more bearding present. I’m not sure if I would use it again, but it is $5 cheaper per meter.

Used larger size squares for background fabric (Aida 14?), which made design not look as nice.

Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

Striped and flower fabric left over from table centerpieces from Grandma MJ’s 80th birthday (including some chocolate cake stains on some bits). White homespun from Sewco. Other misc fabrics from Spotlight sale table. Used a Victorian Textiles 6.5″ drunkard’s path template. Blocks were coming out very uneven, so ended up trimming down to 6.25″ to make them square.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Used Gutterman 50wt thread in white for ditch quilting and straight line quilting. Used King Tut “Cleopatra’ thread for free motion feathers.

Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

Wholecloth middle with borders added. Border fabric was from table coverings from Grandma MJ’s 80th birthday celebration.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Vase, flowers and flourish quilting design by Diane Gaudynski from “October Morning” in Choosing Quilting Designs, Rodale’s Successful Quilting Library, edited by Jane Townswick.

Free motion quilted with Rasant cotton/poly thread. No weight listed, but much thinner than my usual Gutterman 50wt cotton. Feather border hand drawn by me and quilted with Gutterman Sulky 100% cotton 30wt variegated thread.

This time I sprayed the quilt with water to remove the water soluble marker. I didn’t want to soak it again and get the level of shrinkage that I got in “Humble Harvest.” Hopefully no marks will reappear in the future, but will be a good test.

Wholecloth plus borders.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Quilting design based off my own drawing. Machine quilted with Gutterman cotton 50wt thread in matching colors. Used pre-washed homespun and cotton batting, but still got quite a bit of shrinkage after washing. Stippling was too big to contrast with the rest of the design. Still like it though and put it up  for Halloween.

Quilt Top Notes/Techniques

Used a kit from the Fat Quarter Shop with “Everything But the Kitchen Sink” 1930’s reproduction fabric. The kit had tons of fabric, probably 30% more than I actually needed, so I got lots of scraps.

Quilting Notes/Techniques

Quilted flowers in the four patch blocks with Mettler 12wt variegated thread “Easter Egg” with 90 topstitch needle. Thread left a lot of lint in machine. Quilted leaves in white sashsing, large flower in yellow cornerstones going into yellow diagonal corners on sashing, vines on solid green border, looped “l’s” on white border and flowers in green print border all with Gutterman 100% cotton 50wt thread.
